Any graphics designer pointers on how i get my nuget package icon to just show image and not white background?   Is there some standard issue windows 8 desktop app that allows me to do this or can I do it using some icon image editing utility in vs12?

Png or gif with transparency. Paint.NET is a free utility that can do this.

Thanks for the response.   I tried downloading that earlier from //getpaint.net/ and the downloaded setup.exe installed a half dozen or so very suspicious looking components none of which had anything to do with paint.net.   Given that experience and the time it took to remove all that stuff i'm hesitant to try it again 8)

. . . visited c-net download of paint.net and got installer that didn’t install all the suspicious malware!

You can also use chocolatey.

Command line is
cinst paint.net
