Rename the NuPack Project to NuGet

description

Vote for this item if want to rename NuPack Project to NuGet. Reasons:
  • Whether the domain is available or not really doesn't matter
  • Trademarking should be a non-issue
  • It has a nice noun feeling to it. "Let's get some nuggets". "You should just get the latest nuggets from CodePlex"
  • "Today's Gold Nuggets are.......[insert list of cool stuff]"

Better yet, NuGet!

metaman wrote Oct 22, 2010 at 7:02 PM

You guys eat too much fried chicken ;)

gunteman wrote Oct 22, 2010 at 10:37 PM

Absolutely, NuGet could be the core name. I just wanted to emphasize the importance of the "noun factor".... :)

timvw wrote Oct 23, 2010 at 7:37 PM

nu-get.. like apt-get..

shanselman wrote Oct 23, 2010 at 8:29 PM

I just got NuGet.org

Haacked wrote Oct 23, 2010 at 8:31 PM

I don't like Nugget but I like Nuget pronounced like Nougat (candy!). Who doesn't like candy?! You need more candy in your project.

Haacked wrote Oct 23, 2010 at 8:31 PM

May I edit the title to just say "Rename the NuPack project to Nuget"?

crpietschmann wrote Oct 23, 2010 at 8:34 PM

Just add some NuGet to your project.

basslk wrote Oct 23, 2010 at 8:41 PM

I think you should rename it again, what about NewPack !!

stimpy77 wrote Oct 23, 2010 at 8:41 PM

How do I vote down? I like package managers to be associated with packages, not candy or fried chicken.

abhi2434 wrote Oct 23, 2010 at 8:48 PM

NuGet is better.

veshiy0leg wrote Oct 23, 2010 at 8:49 PM

I like it! It's catchy.

JohnPlummer wrote Oct 23, 2010 at 9:32 PM

Sounds good... Just need to come up with a package that can be called chicken :).

Saeedouve wrote Oct 23, 2010 at 9:33 PM

more expressive :) NuGet

loudej wrote Oct 23, 2010 at 9:33 PM

Yeah, +1 for nuget for the nougat and apt-get factors

tysonofyork wrote Oct 23, 2010 at 9:48 PM

amazing how fast this is climbing.... already in second place. I really like it... kinda better than nupack anyway. Sort of a "gem"-ish solution but in it's own way.

DarrelMiller wrote Oct 23, 2010 at 10:04 PM

@tysonofyork No, it's not really surprising that the votes are climbing so quickly. It is simply experiencing the hanselman effect.

Kiliman wrote Oct 23, 2010 at 10:11 PM

NuGet FTW!!

gunteman wrote Oct 23, 2010 at 10:21 PM

@Haacked: Yes, as far as I'm concerned you may rename the title. The NuGet spelling seems to be what people likes, and I think the "nouny" feeling is easy to keep.

gunteman wrote Oct 23, 2010 at 10:27 PM

Edited the title...

mvitorino wrote Oct 23, 2010 at 10:38 PM

NuGet

cDima wrote Oct 23, 2010 at 10:39 PM

-1. Bad. Sounds & spelled like porn websites.

shanselman wrote Oct 23, 2010 at 11:11 PM

Can we edit the title so nugget isn't in the title?

gunteman wrote Oct 23, 2010 at 11:18 PM

Sure thing!

ImprovingJeffS wrote Oct 23, 2010 at 11:19 PM

I like to NuGet NuGet. I like to NuGet NuGet. ...and so on

mharen wrote Oct 23, 2010 at 11:26 PM

If it's supposed to be nu-get.. like apt-get, then why not go with nu-get? that help avoid the pronunciation confusion, too.

secrets wrote Oct 23, 2010 at 11:28 PM

NuGet sounds better...

gunteman wrote Oct 23, 2010 at 11:46 PM

NuGet it is. My intention was to come up with a name that could be used as a noun, and preferably a noun that indicated a "small, but valuable package", just like a "gem". "Nougat" or "nugget", it works either way..

And it works as a verb too :)

gkurts wrote Oct 24, 2010 at 1:49 AM

NuGet sounds close to nugget - I like it!

NaturalCause wrote Oct 24, 2010 at 1:54 AM

@Haacked, if people refer to it as nugget then the name is epic fail. My vote is only because it sounded like Nougat.

shanselman wrote Oct 24, 2010 at 2:00 AM

Agreed. Pronounced NouGet.

dcazzulino wrote Oct 24, 2010 at 2:05 AM

shanselman wrote Today at 5:29 PM
I just got NuGet.org
I guess further voting is pointless now? :P

tk42 wrote Oct 24, 2010 at 2:36 AM

I do like the "Nouget" sound and I'm assuming the "Nu" portion must be preserved.

+1 for NuGet

ferventcoder wrote Oct 24, 2010 at 4:58 AM

@dcazzulino: we bought the first 4 names that people are voting on as well.

ferventcoder wrote Oct 24, 2010 at 5:24 AM

And we can have .nug as the package extension?! Instead of packages, we have nuggets. You use NuGet to get your nuggets. :D

valuja wrote Oct 24, 2010 at 5:56 AM

Good name with a funny catching ring to it!

ikasovitch wrote Oct 24, 2010 at 6:46 AM

I wonder what was the reason to stick with the Nu prefix?

rjperes wrote Oct 24, 2010 at 8:18 AM

NuGet, definetely!

ppiotrowicz wrote Oct 24, 2010 at 8:26 AM

+1 from me

shawty wrote Oct 24, 2010 at 9:12 AM

@shawty_ds: +1 for NuGet , although we must be carefull about it becomming a "Nugget" :-) unless it's a nugget of Gold of Course.

diogoap82 wrote Oct 24, 2010 at 3:38 PM

NuGet

knoxy wrote Oct 24, 2010 at 4:13 PM

Gets my vote!

Haacked wrote Oct 24, 2010 at 5:31 PM

Honestly, I think we don't need to change the extensions. Keep them NuPkg and NuSpec. It still fits given our "Nu" prefix. :) Also, it just creates a lot less churn for everyone who's made a package already. :)

jar349 wrote Oct 24, 2010 at 7:45 PM

Since I'm a really big fan of apt-get, I think that net-get is a fun nod to .NET. Of course, it doesn't have "Nu" in it, so feel free to ignore me!

gunteman wrote Oct 25, 2010 at 2:52 PM

@jar349: Well, the idea was to make sure it's aptly named ;)

GabrielGGuerreiro wrote Oct 25, 2010 at 7:59 PM

Thank God The command is Add-Package/List-Package or we would have something like List-Nugget | Where-Object {$_.Kind -eq "Vegetarian"}
Sorry bout the lame Joke, but I don't think Nugget is a good name.
If we look into AptGet that stands for: Advanced Packaging Tool. We Can take an Idea that it stands for Packaging.
And This Packaging utility would need to be defined first. It looks like a Pluggable .Net Extensions Downloader for Solutions. Obviously thats not a name, but a definition, as Package Manager is too broad for what this does, this is focused for .net not Windows.
I Think NetGet is a better name.

NaturalCause wrote Oct 25, 2010 at 9:39 PM

If people keep calling it Nugget, then the name fails as much as the original 4 haack came up with. When you say NuGet, it sounds NOTHING like NuG Get.

gunteman wrote Oct 26, 2010 at 8:30 AM

It's evident that the appreciation of the word "nugget" differs a lot between different people, maybe even different cultures. When I suggested it I had no idea that "nugget" meant more than "a small item", and I thought that it was used in mainly positive terms, such as "gold nugget". Didn't know that Chicken McNuggets, although not exactly tasty, actually means Chicken McMoosePoo :)

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/nugget

I really don't mind if it becomes "nougat" instead. It is more phonetically correct, and evidently more "politically" correct as well. It's not something that has to be decided. How it's used and who uses it vocally will decide how it's pronounced.

Haacked wrote Oct 26, 2010 at 4:23 PM

I've been pronouncing it Noo-Get as in Nu-Get.

regisbsb wrote Oct 26, 2010 at 6:07 PM

Vote NuGet!!

bsimser wrote Oct 26, 2010 at 7:54 PM

We're gonna need a new logo ;)

leebrandt wrote Oct 26, 2010 at 9:24 PM

NuGet like nougat the substantial stuff between the rich chocolate and the creamy caramel... I like it.

posthope wrote Oct 26, 2010 at 11:38 PM

Why not call the something like "Drops" then you would be adding a "drop" to your app. drop install structuremap

Haacked wrote Oct 27, 2010 at 4:30 AM

@bsimser, yep, already on it. :)

bennyb wrote Oct 28, 2010 at 4:31 PM

Vore "PackMan" as in "Package Manager"

JaySmith wrote Oct 28, 2010 at 8:31 PM

Can't wait to see all the confusion caused between NuGet and Git. Sounds like a bad idea to me.

Haacked wrote Oct 30, 2010 at 5:26 AM

Assigning to DotNetJunky. I believe the work is done, in which case feel free to mark as fixed.

Haacked wrote Oct 30, 2010 at 5:32 AM

Actually, Luan, when you're done, assign back to me to make sure the following happens:
  • Domain name is pointed to right places
  • Rename the CodePlex.com project.
  • ???
