Rename the NuPack Project to NRocks

description

Vote for this item if want to rename NuPack Project to NRocks. Reasons:
  • nrocks.org is available (registered to my name; I will transfer all ownership to Outer Curve Foundation)
  • You can show appreciation to the projects you love and use and instead of "packages" say "Autofac Rocks", "Castle Rocks" or "NHibernate Rocks"
  • Rocks are rough, solid and can take some beating if needed.
  • "NRocks" implies that ".NET Framework" rocks as well.
What do you think?

More details: http://abdullin.com/journal/2010/10/22/suggesting-name-for-nupack-nrocks.html

You can get in touch with me via twitter: http://twitter.com/abdullin

PS: If NRocks is not your absolute favorite, just check the issue tracker for other alternatives (http://nupack.codeplex.com/workitem/list/basic). NFetch is quite popular.

Thanks for voting! We've renamed the project to NuGet. http://haacked.com/archive/2010/10/29/nupack-is-now-nuget.aspx

Agreed

Much better than the other suggestions made initially. I like the "relation" to Gems. I'd favor the dropping of the n prefix, or even going SharpRocks instead, but nRocks is fine.

Can I retract my vote for "NFetch"? :]

I like the similarity of Gems and Rocks. I'll vote for this one.

+1

SharpRocks is awesome and the .org is available. Rocks would be cool, but unfortunately, rocks.org is not available. nRocks is fine too. I agree, much better than the options previously presented.

I like nRocks, and the guy suggesting it already bought the nrocks.org domain name. A really great idea, and I love the reasoning behind the PS commands :).

Doesn't 'Rocks' feel inferior to 'gems'? :)

rdez6173 wrote Oct 22, 2010 at 3:02 PM

I think the gems/rocks thing is a bit.. awkward? "Just install the xyz Rock"..

I've gotta believe that "Just install the xyz Pack" works better. Not saying it's the best, but I can't get on board with nRocks.

I personally would like something like "blades". Similar to hardware blades, they can be dropped in to enable functionality. Plus blades are cooler than rocks (starting around the Bronze age)

Rocks are so much more primitive than gems... and can't we all agree the N* naming scheme is a ghetto?

MelGrubb wrote Oct 22, 2010 at 3:26 PM

A coworker has suggested "stones" as being slightly more interesting. Plus we get to make all kinds of stoner puns and jokes.

interscape wrote Oct 22, 2010 at 4:55 PM

What floats? Very small rocks... So a bunch of very small open source rocks can get your project floating...

abdullin wrote Oct 22, 2010 at 4:58 PM

BTW, also helps to say that your favorite packaged projects rock, just like this terrific package manager rocks or the entire .NET Framework rocks. In short - NRocks.

This is the worst name ever. Can I place negative votes for this one?

Reasons why this is a bad name:
1) We're no longer in high school.
2) Sounds too much like DotNetRocks.
3) Rocks are boring. Don't MS/.NET devs get enough crap about being boring already?
4) Rocks are completely inferior to Gems. It's like the name says "Like Gems, just not as good".
5) It just sounds stupid. Please help us all if this one gets picked.

abdullin wrote Oct 22, 2010 at 5:23 PM

Ryan, of course you can place down-votes - just up-vote every other name, which will essentially work as down-vote for this one.

As for your arguments. I believe name picking is not about strong words or the sense of inferiority. But rather about what good feelings it can bring to the things you work with everyday. I love name NRocks just because I love working with .NET, efficient package managers and all the other great OSS projects. I personally think this all .NET stuff rocks. Windsor rocks, NHibernate rocks, NUnit rocks.. - NRocks.

Massively better than the initial choices, but really, wouldn't you prefer a nugget to a rock, for a small task? I don't we all want all tasks to be small.... :)

(oh, feel free to advertise NRocks there if you want to. I really enjoy this outburst of community creativity!)

I really liked the name nrock, we need more we vote, visit your family, parents, siblings, friends. All ...

abdullin wrote Oct 24, 2010 at 5:06 PM

@elperucho, Phil and Scott really like NuGet. That's probably going to win, given the sheer number of their followers and the fact that NRocks is not mentioned in the official announcement.

Well, I must admit I like NuGet as well (not as appealing as NRocks, but much better than initial options).
