Nuget used for Templates

We are currently looking into using Nuget to be used for new solutions when working on new projects.  One of the ideas we've had is to basically use Nuget to do that.

From my limited experience, it seems that Nuget is made to update an existing project.  Our idea would be that given a blank solution, Nuget could create the projects we want included and then populate those projects with the different code files.  Can someone tell me if that's even technically possible so I don't spend any more time on something that won't work?  Or if this is really something we're trying to use Nuget for where Visual Studio templates make more sense.

You can technically do so by accessing the dte  from your init.ps1 script.  But, is there a specific reason to use Nuget for project creation instead of VS templates ? Did you take a look at having packages as part of VS templates
