What should be the default order of packages in the Recent Packages list?

We are adding a Recent Packages tab in the Add Packages Reference dialog to show the most recently installed (MRI - tm) packages. This list is system-wide (per user) and not just limited to the current solution.

We are evaluating which default order of packages to show in this list between the two choices:

  • Show the most recently installed package first, strictly similar to the MRU list in Windows, VS.
  • Show the package installed most first.

Which sort do your prefer? Or do you have another preference?

The first option. It should behave like a regular MRU menu - less  surprises that way.

I think there are two separate questions here which we should not confuse:

  1. How do we choose what packages are included in the list
  2. How do we visually order the packages that made the list

For #1, ideally it would be smarter than straight MRU.  Instead, it should be more like the Windows Start menu, or the Chrome Most Visited list.  i.e. frequently installed packages should be more 'sticky' than one-timers.

For #2, it should be controlled by the drop down.  Alphabetical seems like a reasonable default.
