Package source name required?

Dec 1, 2010 at 6:19 PM

I'm sure this is covered in a work item or earlier discussion somewhere, but did we at some point make the conscious decision to require package source names in the Settings UI? Do we want to allow folks to enter *just* a source, with no name, as we previously did (and still do in the WebPages _Admin package manager)?

package source name is required now.

I would say if they don't enter a name, it should use the source as the name. That's what I thought we decided on.

Yes, my understanding was also that omitting the name would default it to the URL.

but how hard it is to enter a name? UI-wise, I think it's better to have short names because it avoids scrollbar in the Add package dialog.

Yes, part of the reason we added Name was because of other complaints regarding long URLs being truncated in the drop down.

I think in the end it will help the user associate the name with the source.

Fair enough, I think we can stay with that.  I know I will personally always add an explicit name.
