Please vote on a Logo

Hi All,

We have some logo options to choose from. You'll be choosing a symbol and a font.

Please reply to this with the following information. Top three symbols (a - g) in order of preference. Top three fonts in order of preference. I'll use that information to drive another round of ideas and then hopefully close on this very soon.

Thanks!

p.s. Due to some obscure clauses in the CodePlex Foundation bylaws, I get 42 votes. It's weird, I know.

Does it really have to be orange? :)

Sep 16, 2010 at 12:00 AM

My vote for logo:

1. b

2. c

3. a

For font:

1. 5

2. 7

3. 1

Feel free to add comments to your vote. We can always ask Jonathan to try out other ideas. Or if you have a logo you really like the style of, we can ask him to try out something in that style.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't like any of them.  I withhold my vote in protest! :)

E or D although D is a Portal Ripoff. ;)

The only one I like is b-1. So that one gets all of my three votes? ;)

Orange is cool by me.

Also, look towards the bottom of this thread.

The new Castle logos have a certain polish that these don't but their styling is very similar.

Otherwise, suh-weet!

logos

1. a - without the letter inside it. (see comments)

2. g

3. f

I liked (a) until I looked at it from the perspective of someone who has never seen the logo and I was like "upack"? The logo kind of hides the "n" - which is unfortunate.  I like the box.

fonts

1. 4

2. 4 (sic)

3. 7

as far as the fonts and reasons:

4 - kind of looks like you are packing something since the letters are so close together. Very neat, easy to read, and tidy.

7 - just very tidy and clean.

I agree with Ebbo, orange just doesn’t look nice. Plus all those logos remind me of Blogger’s favicon.

Show us a logo you do like so we know if you have good taste or not and we'll know if we should be worried ;)

Seriously, what's a logo you do like?

Symbols:

a - I like the use of negative space

e - the smaller box seems like a "package" inside the bigger one

g - don't like any of the other ones enough to include a vote

definately stay away from f. it's a great symbol but is a total portal ripoff.

Fonts:

4 - kerning is good and works well with any symbol offsetting it with the simplicity of the typeface

6 - reminds me of a programming font

5 - if i really had to pick one...

As for the symbol I would like to see a modified "e" choice with the smaller look more like it's a package inside a bigger one (maybe with a small arrow coming up and out, like a shortcut arrrow)

You mean something like this? LMAO

Let's try that again. Something like this: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9391884/thelogo.JPG  ??! ;p

LOL. Something like that, but a bit classier. Not sure if it will work or not.

Tally so far:

Symbols:

A - 2 1st place, 1 3rd place

B - 3 1st place

C - 1 1st place, 1 2nd place

D - 2 2nd place

E - 1 1st place

F - 1 3rd place

G - 2 2nd place, 2 third place

Fonts:

1 - 1 1st place, 1 2nd place, 1 3rd place

2 - 0 votes

3 - 1 1st place

4 - 3 1st place

5 - 1 1st place, 1 3rd place

6 - 1 2nd place

7 - 2 2nd place, 1 3rd place

What I've learned from this is we all have very different tastes! ;)

I'll get this information back to the designer with a summary of some of the comments. Thanks!

What's the symbology behind B? I'm the kinda guy who wants to see a meaningful symbol and not just something that looks cool (re: FedEx logo, brilliant symbology there)

I believe B represents both creating a package (so the dots are the course of your contents being put in a package) as well as unpacking a package. It's in the eye of the beholder. :)

I talked to the designer. He mentioned a couple of things that I should have told you:

  1. The logos he provided were meant to be the "print" version of the logos.
  2. He chose the color orange for its similarity to the RSS symbol. Which kind of makes sense when you think of subscribing to a feed.

Next steps:

He's going to try different style treatments for it such as online, etc. and create a mood board like he did for the Orchard logo: http://www.orchardproject.net/walkthroughs/branding/OrchardLogo1.png

But for the near term, he'll try changing the color since we probably want something for Tuesday.

Here's a new Web 2.0/iPhone version of the logo

Jonathan is going to do a mood board later. This can work for our CodePlex site logo for now.

Sep 17, 2010 at 11:52 AM

Cool. I like it. Could we reduce the size of the logo on the site by half? It's really gobbling up a lot of the header.
